Frost resistance

The results of frost resistance test on cast cubes according to SS 13 72 44-IA are shown below.

All air entrained Portland cement based concretes are classified as having a "very good" frost resistance, whereas the slag based concretes all receive the classification of "good" frost resistance including the non-air entrained mix L. The slag based concretes were all characterized by exhibiting a high early scaling. In most cases the majority of the scaling had occurred already at first measurement after 7 days as thin flakes scaling off the surface.

The non-air entrained mix G was classified as having a "not acceptable" frost resistance,  and also mix O containing the super absorbing polymers was classified as having a "not acceptable" frost resistance, i.e. a less favorable ranking than its reference, concrete E.

The frost resistance of the cores drilled from small blocks according to SS 13 72 44-IIIA  is shown below.

The general picture is not as clear as was the case for the cast cubes as the scatter among the air-entrained Portland cement based concretes is greater. Ten out of the fifteen concretes receive identical classification, whereas five concretes exhibit worse frost resistance as drilled cores. The concretes that perform worse as drilled cores do not have anything apparent in common, i.e. they are not slag based, SCCs, or similar.

The evaluation of the concretes in the frost resistance test on respectively cubes and cores is shown below. Note that cubes and cores originate from two different batches for each concrete type.
